Arignar Anna Government Arts College is situated at the isolated Foothill of Vadachennimalai (North Chenni Hill) a small hill aboded with Lord Bala Thandayuthapani (Metamorphism of the God of Kurinji region, Lord Muruga). The place is bounded on the north by Kattukottai, South by Sadasivapuram, East by Thalaivasal and West by Attur. The nearest approachable bus stop kattukottai is just 9 km from Attur on the Salem-Cuddalore National Highway.

Though the college was meant for men at the beginning, women students also enrolled in 1975. Since then the college has been transformed into Co-educational institution. It was affiliated to Periyar University Salem-636 011 in the year 1998-99. The college was accredited  with ‘B’ Grade by NAAC on 28-02-2005 and recognized as a Grade I college by the Govt. of Tamil Nadu
